The ugly truth about who’s hiding behind that avatar!
You can talk to someone for years on a forum and only imagine what they look like. That cool avatar or artistic picture promises so much! Here’s a hilarious look at what those avatars really mean!

About a week ago, I found this table on this forum but don’t ask me how I got there. Maybe a friend sent me the link? Anyway, I actually joined the forum to send a direct message to the person who posted it, asking her permission to post this on my blog, with proper credit to her. She never answered! Well tonight I was searching a little more and found this link where a guy had posted it in 2005, two years before she did. And his last activity on that forum was 2007 so I didn’t bother to email him. If anyone reading this created this originally (or if your ancestors did), please let me know so I can take it down or give proper credit. I just found it so hilarious I had to share!

Too funny. It actually reminded me of back in the day when I had time to play an MMO, and not knowing if the other players were even the same sex as their avatars, let alone remotely as attractive as they made themselves out to be in-game.

Hi Evan! Yes, we get a mental image of someone, and we may lean toward thinking of them as similar to the avatar - and that might lead to much disappointment. :D Thanks for your comment, and please come back soon!

LOL of course you're not on the list! :) I had been using a cute kitten as my Gravatar, but after seeing this I thought I'd better use my real picture or everyone would think I'm [fat, alcoholic, dangerous, has moustache]. :D

That is awesome! My Gravatar actually was created from a picture of me from around 6 or 7 years ago. I am about 20 – 30 lbs heavier than in that photo at the moment. A more realistic picture can be found in my About Us page. I really need to update my Gravatar, but I keep hoping I will look like that again

Absolutely! ;) I looked at your About page, and it's not so different - probably only *you* see the difference a couple of years have made.

:D Glad you liked! I found it on a forum - it must've come to me by StumbleUpon or something, because I wasn't a member of the forum. Then I found it on an even older forum, so it's at least four years old. I just don't know who created it originally.

You are so right about avatars not looking like the person itself. Sometimes you see funny ones and other times not.

Yeah I can imagine we want our avatar to look like the mental image we have of ourselves, or maybe the image we *want* to have on the internet to show others...or when we have time to lose 10 pounds, or something. :)

Klaus @ TechPatio
That was funny … it makes me wonder, what does Doug Dillard and George Serradinho’s avatar mean? They are not anime nor “cartoon character”, but maybe somewhere in between…. any ideas?

Gotta say I actually use a real photo of myself. Unfortunately I don’t have any decent ones, so I usually use holiday snaps – my current Gravatar is a little sunburned!

:D Yes, it's good to not show up on that chart! Your avatar is familiar though - I've seen you somewhere. I've either read your blog before or I've seen you on Twitter. And I guess that's one good reason to keep an avatar for a while - recognition.
