Thesis theme: Images and thumbnails made simple

Finally got Thesis

I downloaded the Thesis theme yesterday afternoon and have been having a great time exploring it! I had wanted Thesis for quite a while, but when I’d read about the wonderful support forum and community I’d think gee, I really don’t have time to get into a big mess with code in a theme. I have a full time job, two full time kids, and an aging house, so I do well to just read interesting stuff and write blog posts once in a while. But it turns out that although the possibilities for customization are nearly unlimited, and I’m sure I’ll have fun trying lots of stuff in coming months, Thesis still looks pretty damn good right out of the box. And there are pages of options to select easily, from how many featured posts and “teasers” you want (my home page is all teasers) to whether you want to make certain links, like the Home link in the nav menu, No Follow. As soon as I clicked Activate then selected the options about my title, sidebars, etc., my site looked as good as it ever has. The images were perfect and the text wrapped great.

Used Thesis teasers to make a magazine style look

Since that much worked well, I decided to press on. I had wanted my blog to look sort of magazine style, so I read on HowToMakeMyBlog.com about making Thesis look very cool and magazine style. I followed Marko’s clear instruction and it was a piece of cake. However, I could not get it through my head how the automatic thumbnail generation was supposed to work. Almost all of my posts have images, and when I specified that all posts on the front page would be teasers, the teasers did not have thumbnails! But in Thesis Options I had filled in the Default Thumbnail Settings , and there really is no way to do that “incorrectly.”

Why did the thumbnails not work?

It turns out that if you upload and insert your image into the post through the regular old WordPress Add an Image, Thesis is not going to see that and generate a thumbnail. But if you upload the image and instead put a link in the the Post Image field to where the image is stored (must be on your domain), a thumbnail of the appropriate size will be automatically generated for you for the teaser. So I went back to the latest few of my posts and removed the image I had put in each one originally, then specified the url for each one in the Post Image field. That worked out great; thumbnails were automatically generated for each post. If you go to my home page, you will see that there are thumbnail pictures now on the latest few posts. I’m not going to redo all of the posts from the past few months but just wanted some visual interest on the recent posts anyway.

But – images put into THUMBNAIL Image box are not automatically resized

One last thing – I had decided that I want to go back to uploading/inserting pictures using WordPress Add an Image so that I could include a link back to the Flickr photographer’s photo stream, and I thought I’d just put a link to the same uploaded image in the Thumbnail Image field. Nope! If you put a URL directly into the Thumbnail Image field, Thesis assumes that it has already been resized and does not resize it. So my link I put in that field caused a very large “thumbnail” that was the original photo, of course.

So – from now on, if I’m using photos from Flickr with the Attribution license,  instead of having the image by clickable back to the photographer’s photo stream, I’m going to just have Photo Credit: followed by that link at the bottom of each post.  That way I can have my Post Image box hold the url for the image (as uploaded to my own miscbytes.com domain) also be where the thumbnail comes from, and the thumbnail will be automatically resized for me.  In other words, I am putting NOTHING into the Thumbnail Image field unless I wanted a different thumbnail from the main image.  And if I do put something in Thumbnail Image field, I will have to resize it to 66×66 myself.

I am very happy I got Thesis – you can have your site looking really good within a few minutes after you click Activate! Then there are untold numbers of amazing things you can do when you do have the time. Get Thesis and start enjoying this awesome theme!

This is informative, and I’m sure will be a lot of help for those who are planning to try Thesis theme. I’m in the process of migrating to WP as well. As much as I like to try Thesis, but the post conversion didn’t go well so I’m still in search of a proper theme. Wish me luck! ^^

Hi Ching Ya! Oh yes good luck on the move to WP! I did that last summer with a pets blog and it really was no fun. One thing – even if you make the old blog blank or just a redirect or something, don’t DELETE your Blogger blog for quite a while. Then images that are uploaded there will still be there for any posts which link to them or if you need them otherwise.

Trying on themes at WordPress.org is much fun! :)

Thank you so much for the reminder. =) I was thinking about the same thing. Yeah, the biggest headache is about the pictures. I’ve got tons of them, some just not fitting to the layout properly. The codes are driving me nuts, but I’m surviving. ha.. time to learn. phew.. Just hope everything will go smoothly.

I agree, at times I really wish there’s a moment where we could sit and learn enough before commencing the big operation. Now it’s more like on-job training. NO mess-up, please! ^^

Hi and welcome to Thesis. I have been using it for a while now and it’s wonderful how easy it is. I have also written a few posts about customizing your theme, you might want to take a look at them (link is at the top of site named Thesis).

I hope you enjoy using Thesis and you can ask me questions and I will try my best to help out.

I’m in the midst of figuring the pictures thing out too. I’ve been linking photos through flickr and am disappointed I can’t generate a thumbnail.

My question: If I need the photo on my domain does that mean I upload the picture onto my site using my cpanel or……????? I’m a little confused by this.

Hi Hillary! You can upload it using cpanel or you can upload it the usual way in WordPress. But instead of "Insert into Post" you just copy the image URL http://yourdomain.com/wp-content/blah/blah/blah/picture.jpg and paste it into the Post Image URL box. If that doesn't make sense, I'll make a screenshot tomorrow and reply to this again. :) Let me know if it works out for you!

The only thing I’ve noticed is that you have to resize the image before uploading. The thumbnail settings are working great, but if the image is huge when uploading it doesn’t seem to matter what settings I have in the Media area. The full image size remains quite large. The only way I’ve found to get around it is to make sure the picture is no bigger than I want it displayed in the post. Unless I’m missing some step.

I do love that the thumbnail is generated without issue, though. I also love Marko’s blog, which has helped me ton in getting to know my Thesis theme.

Hi Andrea! I think that is it - I remember reading Chris Pearson saying that the post image should be a max of four hundred something (depending on the width of your content area in Thesis). I have my content set at 500, and likewise I always download the medium picture from Flickr. It's kind of painful when you first get Thesis because you have to resize any images you want a thumbnail for. Thanks for your comment!

Thank you for confirming what I feared. While I love some things about Thesis, this is definitely not one of them.

Now to try and explain the options to my clients that are using the Thesis theme. This should be fun.

Thanks for your speedy reply :)

:) What I did was to resize and put links in the Post Image URL just for the posts that were going to appear on the front page. Fortunately I didn't have that many posts in the archives, but if you go all the way back then I just have a page of teasers but they don't have thumbnails. I decided that was acceptable because if someone gets to the archives by search results, they'll land on the post itself and it will have its picture. I hadn't had Miscbytes very long before I got Thesis, and I did have the feeling "now or never" due to that very image problem. :)

I’m so glad I came across this! For the life of me I couldn’t understand why my photo weren’t auto resizing.

…I feel a little ashamed though, because as a web designer, I should’ve investigated this matter a little further. Had I scrolled down, I would’ve seen what the problem was.

Instead of clicking, "Insert into Post" as we'd do to let Wordpress handle the image, instead you have to get the url of your photo (which must be stored on your own domain) and put it into the box that says Post Image. Don't put anything into the box that says Thumbnail Image, unless you want a different photo used as the thumbnail. And - if you put something in Thumbnail Image, it must already be resized to a thumbnail.

Im not sure if you are still replying to this post but i thought i would try..My thumbnails shoe fine in my posts, however this is only on the homepage. When i go into my categories the same posts have no thumbnails showing?? any ideas would be appreciated!! thanks..

Hi Colm - I looked at your site - and it looks great! For your categories, you're not using teasers for those pages. So - if you have Thesis 1.7, go to the Thesis options in Site Options, then Archives - "Everything's a Teaser!" That should do it.
