How to find your inner passion

This is a guest post by Stefan Nilsson, the blogger at Ducedo, where he blogs about The Art of Making Money Online.

I have been making money online for a few years now with different methods, including blogging, but it was not until this summer I decided to begin writing in English and it has been great to being able to develop my English writing. My blog Ducedo is now three months old and I thought it would be a great idea to take the next step by writing a guest post. I contacted Christie who kindly approved the idea and here I am. Many thanks, Christie.

I will take this opportunity to talk about my background and draw parallels to what I love to do today. This post ended up a bit longer then I had expected, but bare with me, when you are done reading it you will have the material to find your inner passion.

Our passion comes from our childhood

In high school I began studying psychology and learned more about the famous psychologist Sigmund Freud. If I remember correctly Freud insisted that almost any feeling could be traced back to our childhood. Even though I would love to be able to blame a few things on my parents instead of myself I understand that their influence shaped me into who I am today.

Think about your best friend who loves football. In my case one of my friends started to cheer for Liverpool FC since his brother cheered for them. And to go further his brother cheered for them because their father did it. To mention another less positive feeling my father hates dogs. Well, hate is not the right word to use but he is a bit afraid of them since he got bit as a kid. In return I ended up being afraid for dogs even though I have not had one single bad encounter with one. Today I have managed to conquer this feeling and actually love dogs and I will most certainly get one when it is time for me to settle down, but I still give a jump when a dog barks unexpectedly.

The point I’m trying to make is that feelings you get in your childhood stays with you for a long time. This also includes passions and thanks to this our childhood is a great resource when we decide to choose a niche or decided for what we want to work with.

How I found my passion

I have tried a lot of things in my life which has resulted in me jumping from one activity to another. Now I can see how much time my parents spent on me, driving me to swimming practice, football practice, football matches, golf, scouting and a lot more. Today I have given up on most of them but I still play football and golf a few times every week.

When I began creating websites a few years ago I did the same thing all over again. I started out with football, cameras, piracy, TV and several other niches. After just a few weeks in a niche I got bored and found a new one. Today I still own websites in several different niches but I have hired people to manage the websites for me.

One evening when I got bored, again, I sat down and started to think about my childhood to find out what I really love to do. Thanks to a method I will explain better in the next section I found out that my true passion is not cameras or TV, but to find different methods to make money.

The first memory I have about making money is from long before I even started kindergarten. I knew we always had a package of gum in one of our kitchen cupboards, so I convinced my neighbour (she was the same age as me) to go with me and we ended up walking street up and street down to sell gums to people. It took a few minutes before we met our first potential customer and she ended up convincing us to follow her home to get paid. She went in while we stood outside waiting for her to come out again and a few minutes later our parents showed up. Apparently she understood something was wrong and called them directly. But yes, we did get the money as well…

This memory combined with several similar stories convinced me to create a Swedish blog about making money online and as I told you above, this summer I expanded by starting to write in English. Now I can say without hesitation, this is my true passion.

How to find your passion

This post ended up a bit longer then I would have expected but now it is time to share my method which you can use to find your inner passion.

1. Start with a piece of paper – I know how tempting it is to just skip through and do this exercise without writing anything down, but I promise you it will become much more useful.

2. Draw a line – Put the paper straight in front of you and draw a line from one and to another. Write a 0 in the beginning and your current age at the end. Then you mark every third or fifth year from the beginning to the end of this line.

3. Think of happy memories – Now begin at the span from 0 to 3 and think of every happy memory you have back then. Continue and work your way forward to present time. I know it might be difficult in the beginning when you have few memories, but they might be as important as the memories you have from your last week.

4. Draw parallels – Now you should have a bunch of happy memories, depending on how old you are. If you only have a few, redo the last task since I am sure you will find more. When this is done you should try to find something that combines two memories. If you loved to play football and loved to take photos, could it be a football photographer? Try to combine as many memories as possible and find out what the perfect niche would be.

If you have followed the above tasks you should now have one or several ideas to what your true passion could be. Unfortunately I can’t give you a simple answer to which one of them you should go for, but I can recommend you to try them all before deciding for a niche.

Discussion

Now I would love to hear your personal story. Have you found your true passion? If yes, how did you find it and what have you done since then to take advantage of it?

Great way to find your passion. I would have to start my time line maybe 2 years ago. Everything before that wasn’t happy. So for a few people this method would not work. For everybody else this just maybe the thing to help them find their passion and truly start making money online.

I agree with you that this method might not work if you have a dark past. Hopefully you will be able to find something good from it though. How did you find out which niche you wanted to write in?

Excellent article Stefan, and thanks so much for sharing it here on MiscBytes! I am always fascinated with how to find one’s passion/niche in life, and this sounds like a good straightforward way to “mine the brain” for some good ones we may have forgotten along the way.

What a great first guest post – surely it will help many bloggers, and potential bloggers, finding out what their true passion really is :)

But I think it’s going to be hard to fill out the space between the age of “0″ and “3″, as studies have shown that adults usually can’t place any memories back to before the age of 3,5 – except with some particular kinds of events you might be able to remember all the way back to the age of 2. Never the less, I still think this is a great excercise that people should give a try.

Thank you Klaus, it sounds like I got a A+ then? :)

I mentioned that cursorily in the post and I agree with you. Even though we would remember things from our first 2 years it would probably not be that useful since I'm sure everything was fun back then. It was a unexplored world with new strange things every day.

Stefan,

Nice article well thought out. I found a new passion back in 2006 and that was writing. If you asked me 5 years ago would I ever write blogs, I’d say you’re nuts.

It’s like the old saying – try it, you might like it.

Back at fifth grade I handed in a short novel for my teacher who said it was ok. "It's not like you going to become a writer anyway". Today I make some of my living on writing. Sure it is no short novel, but still.

Hey Stefan! Good piece of work!

But I think , it is better to peep inside yourself and understanding what you like rather than doing these tasks. You may be in different moods when you do these tasks, so the answers may come out different everytime.

Thank you.
Well, I do understand what you mean, but a happy memory is almost always a happy memory independent of what mood you are on. But just to be on the safe side you should never rush this decision. It's better to rethink it once a day in a week instead of rushing off and buying a domain.

This is a really interesting way to discover your passion. What we love can sometimes be so obvious if we will only take a second to notice it. The process you mentioned is a great way to take notice. Thanks!

Ana

Dear Stefan,

That is a very inspiring post, and I am glad that you are doing what you love, by creating the desired effect. I think to achieve the desire we want in life we go with what’s closest to our heart – and in that sometimes is a memory we are most fond off. I think that we can do any job, as we are adaptable beings and can grow to like anything we put our mind to. I think the emotion of passion is strongest when happiness is the chosen result.

When we pick the thing that we feel easiest drawn to, which in turn rewards us with value-the work of our inner doing or simply being, it drives us to achieve something greater than just an emotion. I think this is the real measure of who we are here, and that is what it’s really about. Understanding why we draw ourselfs to certain things is a self discovery in itself, and it is good to see you acknowledge it so in your awareness and life experience.

I have passion for many things in life, but this passion is just that, an emotion and I have a greater need to attune my energy into becoming clearer and consciously aware of my very being, for the purpose of enlightening others. :)

Christie, Thank you for such a wonderful insightful guest speaker. :)

Very nicely written, Stefan. I didn’t you’re so active back in your younger days. wow.. an athlete you are. ^^
As time passes, I find out more about what I love to do. It’s important to have the passion lives on, to go for what you’re really into instead of just following suit because everyone else has. It’s my dream to realize my passion(s), I don’t care how long it will take me, it’s never going away.

Find your passion and may it lives on!

That is a really interesting way to do it. When I first saw the title, I thought it was going to be something touchy-feely, but you gave concrete directions. I’ll have to give this a try, and perhaps get my wife to do it, too.

The big thing sometimes, with all the responsibilities in life, might be not finding your passion, but doing something about it after you find it.

I personally prefer to be logical and break down everything into small pieces instead of, as you said, being touchy-feely. I highly recommend you to do so and feel free to get back to me with the results.

About the second part then. Do you mean finding the time to keep up with your true passion?

Well, I would not be able to think that far back into my childhood. The last few months (just less than 3 years) have been very challenging as I got divorced and I needed to find something to keep me busy and occupied. I took up being on the net and eventually started my blog. It has it’s ups and downs, but I like it and it makes me happy.

Some people find their passion, but don’t go with it. There are always excuses and then they forget about it. One needs to take action now and not later. Be happy now and not later.

I saw some calculations on this a few weeks ago. If you never do anything fun and just save your belongings, you will have about 200 000 dollar in savings when you turn 65. Personally I would much rather have fun all my life and do what I love, instead of getting this money.

Great post and great story Stefan. I am pretty passionate about what I do right now… but when I get a chance I will try your Passion Test, as it sounds very interesting.

If I had life to do over again and I would beg my parents to give me golf lessons when I was young and stick with all my life. I can’t think of anything better than being a professional golfer… especially if I was in the top 10 in the world :)

Unfortunately, I am way past the age of that coming true :(

There's mainly three things I wish my parents had done different with me. Teach me to become a golf pro, since this is a sport with few injuries and you can go on for a long time. Learn me to play guitar and piano, with the urge to be a bit more musically. And last, force me to take more responsibility which would have given me a bigger self-confidence.

Inner passion is so essential to develop and you outline a pretty interesting way to help you uncover it.

I have been passionate about art all my life and that is why I have pursued my development as an artist through art school which I am now just wrapping up. Now the challenge is taking my inner passion and turning it into a living.
