How Google Wave is going to change your life – and maybe your blog

Google says that Google Wave will be available to the public in just a few more months. So far there is no definite date, but some lucky people are getting to participate in the development sandbox right now. Google Wave will be open source, because they need developers to contribute to it and think of more cool stuff to do with it – and developers are still being granted access to the Sandbox, if you’d like to apply.

Now instead of the emails we write and send back and forth, a conversation in Google Wave is a shared object hosted on a server somewhere. You can add whatever friends you want to a conversation, and when they open the wave themselves they will see messages you have written to them. You can add text, pictures, videos, maps, and other types of items to a wave and change the content at any time. Currently, when we write regular old emails to each other, we have to reply to the whole thing in some way, by inserting our responses in between the original message, or by just putting our response in some sort of order. With Google Wave, you can have server split a message apart so you respond to one sentence on its own, if you like. If the other person’s wave is open while you’re typing, they actually see the characters appear! You can be formulating your own reply while you’re reading their typing, instead of just waiting around wondering what the heck is taking so long (like when in IM you see that the other person “is typing a message.” This feature is thought to speed up conversation! But gee, maybe I don’t want someone looking “over my shoulder” while I type! Sometimes I might like to have a rough draft before I send. Apparently a lot of people feel that way, so they are adding a box you can check if you don’t want anyone to see what you’re typing until you hit the Done button. Also, if you add a new user to your conversation after some of it has already taken place, the new user is able to use the Playback button to see the history – actually read each entry and response in order. And although a conversation might get full of people, it is easy to create a private reply that only a chosen one or few can see. When you do that, you just drag in only the users you want.

Federation is supported using the Google Wave Federation Protocol, so any institution will be able to develop Wave services, give accounts to their users, and then still be able to talk to people on other Wave services and the Google Waveservice. They’ll still get live character by character messages just like the rest of us, even if they have developed their own user interface. This should be very valuable for collaboration – think of researchers in different universities or other institutions, all able to talk to each other in a wave, using the authentication of their home institution and adding others from other Wave systems as needed.

Now most importantly to me – if I want to display a wave on my blog, how will I do it? Fortunately there’s already at least one WordPress plugin available! The author states that is is easy to use; you just have to put the ID of the wave in there. This plugin has been updated to feature a TinyMCE button for embedding the wave. Just click on the button and it will show you a prompt where you can enter the wave id and other parameters. The Wavr plugin implements the full wave embed api. In the near future, it is planned to include widgets for the sidebar! To find the WaveID of the wave you want, open it on Google Wave and click on DebugGet Current Wave ID. Make sure you use the full wave id (something like wavesandbox.com!w+MNJWKLNa%A).

I can’t wait to get my hands on Google Wave, and as soon as I do, I promise a much more detailed review – or hopefully a Sandbox Wave of our own here at MiscBytes! Then all I will need is the hugest monitor I can get, because I’ll soon be addicted to Google Wave and want to keep an eye on it no matter what else I’m doing around the house. How about you? Do you see yourself getting deeply into Google Wave and adding it to your blog?

I honestly can’t wait for Google Wave to go public so I can get my hands on it. There have been just too many posts about it that make it sound like the next greatest thing.

I know a lot of people talk about Google trying to take over the world :) but I am so glad they are thinking big and coming up with something so cool. The sky's the limit with this one, if you like to code, and of course those of us who just want to use what is there will find it easy to embed on our blogs.

There seem to be a very large number of features, still increasing really, as people request them and developers work on them. I think this will only add to my reluctance to be away from internet access for very long periods of time - I don't want to miss what's happening on the Wave!

Google is smart a$$. They always come with a new and innovative ideas. I can’t wait for Google wave to release, it is definitely going to take internet world by storm. One thing is sure that it will be a feature rich package and it will make google much much ahead than other companies.

Very well written review! You know, Christie I am actually waiting for it as well! It’s really amazing how social networking has evolving these days. Things are getting more compact, well squeezed into one, I just hope the maintenance and memory won’t take much of the space, other than that, I’m just as happy as anyone who loves to try on new gadgets!

Anticipating for Google Wave. See you there perhaps? =)

I can’t wait for google wave to come out. Trying to help or get help from others would go a lot faster. Also when 2 people have the same problem I could refer the second person to the first convo. I surely hope its not months before google wave comes out.

You're right! Heck maybe we can even use a Wave at work! It would be a lot of fun to collaborate that way someday.

Klaus @ TechPatio

I just don’t get how Wave could be used on a blog, or did I miss something in the post? :) Or maybe I’m just looking at Wave from a completely different (and possible wrong) point of view…

My understanding is that you will be able to embed a Wave on a web page just like we currently do a YouTube video. If you get the Wave ID, you can just put that into the WordPress plugin and then the Wave will work on your webpage just like it does in the regular Wave client. Wave Embed Developer's Guide

I do too! I filled out the form to apply to play with it early, but I think I failed the one question where they ask what was your favorite part of the keynote address? Umm...I haven't watched it yet, was my answer. :)

This could be pretty cool. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes in a polemic environment, when opinions vary sharply. On the other hand, it could be a useful tool in the classroom–it would eliminate the loudest voice component.

Anthony that is SUCH a good point! How often is it that some people do not get to say much or anything at all because someone else is louder or interrupts! I sure wish we had Google Wave for not only classrooms, but all sorts of meetings that adults go to too! :) We'd all get to respond to whatever sentence or word we wanted to, and no one locks the whole thing up to make it their own podium.

Since they have the Embed API and we already have a WordPress plugin available to embed a wave on our blogs, I am just looking forward to embedding a wave on my blog. As much fun as I have talking to readers in the comments, I hope an embedded Wave will make things even more interactive and fun - whether it's a MiscBytes community or a bigger community where I just happen to have the wave embedded here too.

Once it all gets up and running, you'll get used to it and enjoy it a lot. We can all talk in a wave, adding pictures, talking at the same time - it is going to make communicating online a lot more fun and effective. Thanks for your comment and please come back soon!
