Google Wave Sandbox – I have a login!
Google has granted me access to the Google Wave Sandbox now, and I started exploring it late last night. I’ll be doing more posts on Google Wave as I learn about it.
I just wanted to share with you the little I’ve done so far so you could see the screen shots for yourself! By the way, don’t try getting into Google Wave with Internet Explorer; it will tell you immediately to head for Firefox, Safari, or Chrome!
Creating a Test Wave
I don’t have any real contacts on there to talk to yet, so when I was playing with it I added a contact just for testing and called him Klaus, since Klaus @ Techpatio is my #1 commentator right now.
I created a new wave and typed a little message. Then I added Klaus and typed a little more, which he would have been able to see if he had an account. If he had wanted to see what happened before I added him, he could have clicked the Playback button. Here’s the wave after I have done all that:
Google Wave Playback feature
In the following screenshots, I’ll show you what happens when I click Playback now, and click the Play button each time after that.
Embedding Waves
Below I have embedded a public Welcome Wave from the Sandbox into this post using the Wavr WordPress plugin. Unfortunately you have to have a login at Google Wave Sandbox in order to see it. So what are you waiting for!?
[wave id="wavesandbox.com!w+sQGsppxC%B"]
OK, to satisfy your curiosity if you don’t yet have a login, below is a picture of the Wave that is embedded here. It is a scrolling window though, so this is just a peek. If this were a Wave we were actually participating in, it would be our conversation. This particular Wave is a wiki of instructions for new Wave users.

Yes! I've been in a university research group, so I'm well aware of how collaborators could use the Wave to really speed up their work. I'm also aware of how *fun* the Wave will be socially. Imagine dragging and dropping photos and people into your IM conversations. I'm looking forward to exploring it further.

Hi Shadow! Yes I did. The form wanted to know why I wanted an account and I was honest. "I am only a blogger, but I would like to explore Google Wave and embed waves on my blog." Yep - I can see myself someday having a page that has a Wave embedded in it and anyone who cares to log in can participate. Perhaps I'll write my blog content right there, and people can watch it change and get added to, and they can modify/reply wherever they like. Very exciting stuff.

Klaus @ TechPatio
I love how they won’t let Internet Explorer users in there, that’ll teach Microsoft to up their browser-game a bit
You’re right about the need for a wave login to see the wave you embedded, I can’t see anything – maybe you could post a screenshot of what it would have looked like, if we had a wave login?
And thanks for mentioning me in the post, that’s awesome!!

It really is funny! At first with IE you get a warning to click here to continue, then it's pretty much all over. Just for you, :) I added a picture of the wave at the end of the post. The real one is a scrolling window containing a wiki telling how to use Google Wave Sandbox.

I am really a rookie when it comes to the internet, I honestly have no clue what Google Wave is, but thanks to this post I will be heading over there to check it out.
If I set up an account I will let you know so we can add each other.

Wow! It looks great. Google has its own way to teach MS. Hope to see more posts on google wave on your blog. Can’t stop myself from trying out the wave.

Thanks Ricky! I am looking forward to exploring it more and finding some more cool features to show you.

Klaus @ TechPatio
Thanks for the screenshot, for us non-Wave users.
But I still don’t get it, I suppose… why would one want to engage with blog readers in a ‘wave’ rather than in the blog comments, where the comments will count as content for search engines too? I assume the ‘wave’ content may not be indexable? I guess we’ll see.

Ah, I have to admit it's sheerly the "coolness factor" for me. :) I'll probably do mostly the usual kinds of posts and comments, unless blogging really changes that much once the Wave gets popular. But I'll always have a Wave available for those who want to drop in and chat withe me. :) Just a little geekiness here!

I like your blog. I have been dying for a Google Wave account and saw this blog on my Google Alerts for Google Wave and thought I might want to check it out. But I don’t think I should get a sandbox account and just get the real one in the very end of Sep. Thanks for posting.

Hi Emanuel! Well, it's free, so why not get a month's worth of playing around in the Sandbox to get used to things, maybe build a robot of gadget, if you care to. You'll be a month ahead of the rest of the world that way! There are a lot of public Waves to join in if you want to do that. Thanks for your comment, and please come back soon!

I have heard about Google Wave a while ago and did not really pay too much attention at that time. After reading this post, it so seems that in can be interesting after all. wonder if Microsfot will counter this with something, considering it is banned for IE, lol.
So will Wave be the next (or substitute) to Twitter? We’ll see. Great post to get me started sniffing around this Wave thing.

I wonder if it will be the "Twitter killer," or I guess it's targeted that way anyway. Because with Wave we can drag people into conversations, drag other media into them too, reply to little parts of a conversation, and see it typed live. Thanks for your comment!!

I don’t think this will kick off as well as most Google applications have in the past. The instant messaging chat you can do with Google mail is vastly inferior to services like Skype and AIM that are already out there, so I’m skeptical as far as how much Google will be able to revolutionize internet communication with this.

Hi Peter! It will be interesting to see how it goes. I have never used Skype or AIM myself, so I have nothing to compare to. I've used mainly Yahoo and MSN IM, with some Pidgin in the past too. Thanks for your comment and please come back to MiscBytes soon!

I sure hope it can! There are a lot of developers working on various widgets, robots, other things that can be used in the Wave. Since it's open source they get the benefit of a whole community working on it and finding all the bugs. :)

That’s a brilliant review Christie, I’m so glad you took the initiative to request the login. I, for one is curious about Google Wave and can’t wait for its release. Your post has prompted me to request for the login too, so *finger cross*. ^^ I’ll be eyeing more for your reviews surely! I was also wondering if such application can compete with traditional style of commenting, a lot of work and trials to be done if they wish to convince all bloggers to adapt it. Yet again, anything is possible these days, we’ll see. ^^
p/s: all the whiles I thought I’ve commented… I must be getting older..

I think it will be useful, to different people in different ways of course. Researchers can talk to each other in real time, but 3rd graders (or other internet enthusiasts) can just have fun with talking too. :)

Why not go on and request a login? I heard that the Wave would be available starting at the end of this month, so you may as well have your request in. Or get into the Sandbox to get your feet wet. I'm with you - Google is always thinking of something fun for us to play with.

Google Wave is just a precursor to the tsunamis that are going to hit this planet soon (just like the new Pepsi logo that looks like a giant wave). There are various other symbols out there right now, but these are two of the most prominent.

Fascinating. I hope the ACL is more robust than Google Sites. I use DokuWiki now, and the admin for ACL is marvelously easy and comprehensive. You can set up groups and assign users and control access all the way down to single pages or different name spaces. If Google Wave does not provide minute access controls it will still be badly crippled (as Google Sites is today, for this one reason alone).
