Last July I converted my old Blogspot blog to a self-hosted WordPress blog and signed up with BlueHost for a year of hosting. I had no idea what I was doing and had never seen cPanel or any of that other stuff before. But BlueHost has something called SimpleScripts that allows you to install WordPress in a stupid simple way. It’s the “one-click” installation, and I was glad to see it! I know some folks might like to install manually, but I didn’t see anything wrong with letting SimpleScripts take care of the details for me. I’ve used SimpleScripts many times since then and it’s been quick and reliable.
About a week or two after I first signed up at BlueHost, I decided I hated my domain name and not only wanted to get a new name, I wanted that domain name banished from my account. See, at BlueHost you can have unlimited domains hosted on your account at no extra charge, but one of them is going to be the “main” domain, with the account’s user name derived from the domain name. So anyway, once I decided I hated that domain I called their 24/7 technical support. The guy who answered was extremely nice and did not argue. He told me I’d need to pay $10 to register the new domain, of course (the first domain is free when you sign up) but he made it be the main domain of my account and got rid of the old one. So my user name became a variant of the new domain and I was off and running.
I’ve had to call them a couple of other times, and it’s never been due to anything wrong on their part. One time it was because I hosed my own blog, and I needed help dealing with the mySQL database. A few days ago I called them because I needed to change permissions on a file and didn’t understand why I couldn’t (simply because the folder that contained the file needed its permissions changed first). Every time I’ve called BlueHost technical support, a guy has answered within a minute or at most two. Every time, he has been friendly and helpful and sharp and has solved my problem. So I don’t panic anymore when I hose something up.
I just call BlueHost and I know that their technical support person will either tell me easily how to fix it or he can always do it on his end. So I called them one more time – to sign up for another year and to ask them to make MiscBytes.com my main domain so I could sign in as miscbytes and let the old “main domain” expire. It went off without a hitch.
