The iPad and other tablets have been touted as the next wave of computing technology, and their many uses are being extolled to replace or enhance functionality previously offered by a laptop. Just like with the iPod Touch, the iPad has “an app for that” and allows you to make calls, take photos, check e-mail, play games, surf the Internet, watch movies, and much more. With the hefty price tag of the iPad and the various uses it offers, the question begs to be asked: Can your iPad replace your laptop? Well, it depends. Here’s why:
Peripherals
If you want the full functionality of a laptop or PC on your tablet, you are going to have to invest in some peripherals. Basic pieces include a wireless keyboard and mouse. Sure, you can type on your touch screen, but if you have bulk word processing to do, you’ll spend twice as long doing it with one-finger pecking. (Or you’ll have to become adept at typing on a smaller glass screen.) Depending on your needs, you may also want to connect to a printer or use graphics tools.
Software
The iPad and most other tablets do not come with the standard operating system of a PC (such as Windows or OSX) and do not come with traditional software. In particular, many users will find the lack of an Office suite to be inconvenient, especially for bulk word processing or the creation of spread sheets. However, applications available through the iTunes store offer compatible capabilities, and the documents created through these applications can later be opened in the Office suite. Each application has to be purchased separately. Depending on your needs, you may find that add-ons like these are not available for the type of software you were used to using in the past on your laptop or PC.
Storage
Laptops and PCs have significantly more storage available than do tablets. Even high-end tablets typically only have about 64GB of space, whereas a PC or laptop can have hundreds of gigabytes. If you are interested in a laptop or tablet for simple usage and do not need to use high-end programs or store a lot of data, then you can use an iPad or tablet. If you want to store a lot of music, graphics, or video on your tablet, you might want to opt for a laptop or PC.
Functionality
Tablets have some limited functionality when compared to a laptop or PC. For example, bloggers cannot access a full WordPress interface on an iPad. Advanced graphics programs won’t run on the tablet. Video cannot be downloaded to the tablet, only streamed. Carefully consider the needs you will have for a laptop or tablet before deciding on which to purchase. Simple tasks can be achieved on a tablet, but more advanced data manipulation or creation will typically require a laptop or PC.

Thanks, Heather…
I found this article to be very informative…I’ve made my decision…When I get the funds up to buy either, I am definitely going for a laptop…Maybe later, I would opt for a Kindle Fire as something nice to have for little tasks…
Thanks again for laying out very important things to consider when making that choice…
Shelley…
Thanks so much for this article Heather. I’ve been lusting after an iPad for quite a while, and this post has really helped to point out all the logical differences between iPads and PCs/laptops. Looks like an iPad would be great for curling up with for some entertainment such as reading or web surfing, but when it comes down to running a blog or other business, sometimes the boring old laptop will save us some time.
I didnt know that its impossible to download a video to the ipad. I dont want it anymore. I will buy amazons Fire Tablet instead. Hopefully it will be released soon in europe…
Hi Cindy,
Although the article says that iPads have 64 MB of space, actually of course that has to be a typo. They have 16, 32, or 64 GB of space. So you can certainly download videos – it just won’t hold the hundreds of GB of video hat a PC would. And – I’m about to correct the article right now!
Thanks!
I don’t believe that Ipad can be the perfect replacement. I’m guessing that for drawing and ereading is perfect.
Well I am not thinking of it and I wouldn’t want to replace Laptop with iPad. Laptop is better than iPad in many ways.
Hi, Heather! Thanks for sharing. iPad is great as it allows you to be more flexible with many applications. But I believe my good old laptop will still work best for me as a writer and blogger.
Amen. I’d hate to have to do a large volume of writing on a small device.
At this point no tablet can replace a PC. Even after buying the peripherals, you still have a small PC, which can’t match the functionalities of an actual computer.
Yep – I still think I’d love to have an iPad, but I’d want to use it for capturing notes to send to Evernote, for easy browsing wherever/whenever, and for reading ebooks in a comfy position. But nothing beats a real computer when it comes to trying to get something done!
Of course, I would like to own a small PC, although I also have the ipad. The ipad is convenient and easy for me, but some jobs must ask me to use PC. So I says ipad never could replace PC
, haha it just is my idea. Thank you for your sharing.
Well an iPad may be able to replace a laptop, but a laptop will surely be easier to use and much more practical for some more time. I mean what is the big deal in using an iPad with a keyboard and a mouse and who knows what else…
I would prefer a desktop over an iPad, a laptop or any mobile device. But sometimes I really need to be online wherever I am so I guess ill choose a laptop over an iPad.
I would prefer a laptop over an iPad. Its easier to use plus its loaded with a lot of apps and programs unlike the iPad. its also cheaper.
iPad is just for change. But to do the real job laptop is the only option.
Nice work,
If you remove niche creative professionals from the equation, the areas that you’re left with are where the iPad is rapidly making a splash. Many pros can, believe it or not, possibly find a tablet to be more advantageous than a laptop. But I think iPad can not replace our laptop no doubt it is a moderated form but it is just for a average users.
I am not gonna replace it with my laptop.
Hello,
What Do you think about other tablets like Amazon Kindle Fire? http://www.aboutkindlefire.net/amazon-kindle-fire-teardown-facts-it-is-worth-209-63/2011/118/
I have bought an iPad for a while ago but it will never replace my laptop !
iPad is great but it will take a little more time to outsource laptops. That´s my opinion.
I have seen the benefits of the Ipad where a traditional laptop can be an issue. For example I do a lot of networking and find the ipad an amazing as a presentation tool.
Personally, i don’t think iPad can replace laptops. iPad is a great gadget but it has limited functionality. It think it’s only a social status symbol that’s why people are buying it.
Ipad will never 100% replace Laptop!
Ipod is useful for basic internet work like mail, facebook… etc
If ipad would have fisical keyboard and usb it will be totaly reeplacable for notebook.
Ipad is for fancy people
i think …. i’m not comfortable if i used ipad for my business activities … especially at the size .. i prefer use laptop or netbook …
best regards
I think we are getting close, but I wouldn’t say the touch screen usability has been perfected to the point yet where we can throw out the laptop.
That is the point. My fother have old nokia 6600, and when I use it I understand him why he still use it. But touch screen have so many advantages, that you have to choose it.
In 5 years, 80% people who now have mobile phones will have ipad or galaxy tab, or some other tab! BEcause it is usefull for everyday things.
Thanks for the article Heather,
I suppose at the end of the day it comes down to personal choice and what you will be using it for. For me I am going to be a laptop guy for the forseeable future – I see the attraction of tablets but for me they just aren’t powerful yet…(on the other hand they are far more portable)…
…ahhh maybe I do need one!
I think the ipad could replace the laptop in a lot of areas, but not completely. People will still use laptops for things that an ipad is not convenient with. Similar to people still use desktops even though laptops contain pretty much the same capabilities.
Hi! Interesting post, a lot of useful information. I do not like ipad prefer conventional laptops. Habit, perhaps, but it’s time to master the art technology.
I’m not comfortable with Ipad. A laptop seems to work out fine for me.
Laptop for real work Ipad for fun! buy what you need more.
I am not using an iPad so I can’t really tell. All I know is that I am happy with my laptop but of course, I wish I have an iPad that is more handy.
There will always be major differences between the two and that would be the deciding factors for consumers. Great job in pointing out some of the factors. It also depends on how they are going to use the gadget.
I think Ipad will never replace laptop because of screen size only . Screen size matters. One day ipad will come in the size of laptop.
It depends…for business purposes its better to use a laptop i think. however using ipads is becoming more and more popular!
I got the iPad thinking it might replace my laptop. It in no way is a good replacement for a laptop!
My ipad replces my laptop in certain circonstances: watching videos on youtube, showing my clients my work (i’m a photographer), checking my schedule, surfing the web (except flash website). Besides that well, nothing much. I need a powerful computer for editing pictures and videos. But one of the great thing about the ipad is the lightness, just gorgeous
